Course:  Desktop Publishing and Graphic Design/Yearbook

Instructor:  Cindy Gruntmeir

 

Course Description:  This class will prepare students to enter the workplace or pursue post-secondary education or technology training.  Desktop Publishing and Graphic Design/Yearbook students will learn skills that will enable them to produce the yearbook, a monthly school newsletter, the senior slide show, the school web site, digital video productions, the athletic association banquet program, along with a menagerie of other projects.

 

Prerequisite:  Administrative Technologies II and Teacher Approval

 

Purpose:  Technology plays an integral role in student success in all school curriculums.  Today’s students must have knowledge of computer and Internet use so they can research topics and share their discoveries through word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentations, and graphics software.  Fundamentals of Administrative Technologies, Administrative Technologies II, Desktop Publishing and Graphic Design/Yearbook are classes taught by the Business Technology Department at Cashion High School.  As students progress through these classes they are preparing to enter the workplace and post-secondary education by learning industry-standard software.  The following software is utilized at Cashion High School:

 

            Fundamentals of Administrative Technologies:  MS Word, Practical PC

 

Administrative Technologies II:  MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Practical PC

 

Desktop Publishing and Graphic Design/Yearbook:  Adobe Indesign, Adobe Photoshop, MS FrontPage

 

Course Competencies:  Upon successful completion of this class, students should be able to:

 

1.  Use desktop publishing software to produce the yearbook, newsletter, programs, brochures, and other timely projects.

2.  Use video editing programs to split, trim, and organize video and to add transitions and sound to finish the project.

3.  Use graphic software to scan pictures and manipulate them to fit a project.

4.  Use advanced equipment such as digital still and video cameras, scanners, and a video editing machine.

5.  Use web design software to prepare the school’s web page.

6.  Demonstrate competencies learned through the Desktop Publishing and Graphic Design Course Syllabus.

Tentative Schedule:  This in only to give the reader an idea of projects to be covered through the year.  Students in this class work independently.  Most projects are ongoing throughout the year.  Projects include the yearbook, school newsletter, senior slide show, All-Sports Video, video for the beginning of the next school year, Athletic Association Banquet program, school web site, miscellaneous timely projects that occur throughout the year.

                        Daily Assignments                                  25 pts.

                        Tests/Quizes                                   50-100 pts.

            Grading Scale:

                        90-100    A                  70-79   C                     Below 59     F

                        80-89      B                   60-69   D

Competencies Gained

 

Students completing Desktop Publishing and Graphic Design and Yearbook should be familiar with the learning competencies associated with the CareerTech Information Technology/Interactive Media Cluster for the Desktop Publisher/Graphic Designer Career Pathway/Major.  All students should be prepared to pass the Brainbench Adobe Indesign Certification Exam.
